Eddie Smith attends Royal Garden Party

Having served on the Midlands District Committee for over 45 years and on the National Committee for 32 years Eddie Smith recently received an invitation to a Royal Garden Party for his outstanding services to the sport of time trialling.

On the 10th June 2014, which also happened to be Prince Phillip’s birthday, Eddie and his wife Mavis joined thousands of other guests at Buckingham Palace. Passing through the palace and into the gardens there was plenty of time to stroll around the grounds of the palace and to walk down to the lake although Eddie said the gardens were not quite what he expected. “They were not immaculate formal gardens like you would expect at somewhere like Versailles” he said “but there were lots of trees and more informal lawns and open spaces.”

Eddie quickly realised that there were ushers mingling with the guests and inviting some of them to talk to the royal family. On spotting Eddie’s CTT Gold Badge of Honour one of them approached him and invited him to meet the Duke of Gloucester. When asked “what exactly is time trialling?” Eddie was able to say “Well, have you heard of Bradley Wiggins?...”

Tea, sandwiches and cake were of course on offer and Eddie made sure he fulfilled his ambition of eating a royal cucumber sandwich. However, he did comment that the tomato in a ham and tomato sandwich was sliced more thinly than he could ever have imagined!

It is wonderful to see Eddie receiving royal recognition for his many years of service to the sport and we offer him our warmest congratulations on this achievement.
