Greatest increase in Rankings points - Up 68 points

We now have an online home for discussing time trials in the Midlands District – make sure you are a member of this Facebook group  and join in the discussion about what’s going on.

The 2015 season continued with four more solo open time trials in the Midlands, two of them thanks to the Veterans Time Trial Association (VTTA). On the first weekend in April the Midlands Group of the VTTA attracted a full field of 120 riders for its first event of the season, a 10-miler on the Thurston-Ryton A45 course. Then two weeks later an exciting new collaboration between the VTTA and the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists (LVRC) introduced a new event on a challenging course near Malvern. The final weekend in April saw two events, first the Warwicks RC 10 on the Dunnington-Alcester course and then the Beacon RCC’s classic hilly time trial, the Little Mountain Time Trial (LMTT). This year the LMTT was a counting event for the National TT Series and attracted top riders from all over the country.

There are three riders who have progressed up a category for the first time in April and two of these ride for the club Media Velo: Congratulations to Elliot Maynard and James Middleton who rode their first open TTs in the Midlands in only April and May last year but they have both made light work of moving up the rankings. Elliot showed marked improvement in the VTTA 10 and Warwicks 10, moving up to placings of 10th and 12th. With these two results he becomes a 2nd cat and in fact achieved the highest increase in ranking points in April. He is therefore the lucky winner of a free sports massage from our sponsor, Sam Boswell of SBR Massage.

James Middleton, meanwhile, has taken a 1st, a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th place in Midlands events this season which is startling progress compared to 16th place which was his best performance just 12 months ago! He becomes an Elite rider in our Rankings. Congratulations James!

The third rider to move up a category this month, in contrast, is very noteworthy for his tenacity and persistence over several years. Chapeau to Michael Stallard (Stratford CC) who has been a prolific Midlands rider since the inception of the Rankings in 2009 and has generally been  a 2nd cat, just lapsing down to 3rd-cat on a couple of occasions.  So it’s many congratulations to Michael this month on finally sneaking into the 1st-cats with a 2-point improvement thanks to 13th place with a 22:10 in the VTTA 10 in April.

Each month riders appear in the categories for the first time when they initially complete five counting events. Well done to the following riders who have appeared for the first time in the categories (above 4th-cat):

  • David Mead (Hinckley CRC) – 1st Cat
  • Greg Ashley  (Team Jewson – MI Racing - Polypipe)  – 3rd Cat

Finally, can someone tell me is there something in the water in Worcester? This month three of the top six riders for increased points are from the Worcester St John’s!

Well done to all riders on the successes and progress.
